The BHR Group Digital Rights Careers Newsletter - Issue 5

Dear Colleagues:

These careers-focused newsletters are about you and your future working at the intersection of tech, policy, law, and human rights. The news is almost entirely listings for internships, fellowships, and jobs available. When we come across especially good articles focused on careers in this field, we’ll include those too. Here’s a terrific example. Just last week, tech policy leader Aïda Ndiaye, who is Meta’s Head of Public Policy, Policy Campaigns, and Programs, wrote an outstanding piece about getting started in the tech policy field.

We’ve also lined up some star digital rights practitioners for short, written, careers-focused interviews and hope each practitioner will leave you with a few unique insights to consider as you make career choices - whether you’re a current graduate student, a new diplomat, a long-time researcher and teacher, a senior executive, or an experienced human rights activist. Check out the first interview in the previous issue with brilliant scholar-practitioner Prof. Evelyn Aswad. 

Due to pressing matters, our guest practitioner for this issue couldn’t join. For now, you’re stuck with me. So, here are three questions I suggest my students or colleagues ask themselves when they’re interviewing for an internship, fellowship, or job or evaluating whether their current job is the right one for them.

1. Are you around people of integrity? People committed to ethics, inclusiveness, teamwork, transparency, diversity, etc.

2. Is your role contributing to a social good? Something that has a purpose/cause that you support, an impact on the rights, safety, or lives of a community of users. You can ask the same question about the organization you’re at itself.

3. Are you continuously learning? Gaining knowledge and wisdom in a particular field and in how to navigate inside and outside an organization (management, leadership, mentoring, etc.).

When thinking about jobs in digital rights, you’ll of course have lots of other important considerations like safety, workload, compensation, location, manager, hours, leave policy, travel, etc. You’ll need to prioritize all these factors depending on your own circumstances. Give some thought to the three questions outlined here, develop questions of your own, and check-in with yourself regularly on your answers and what they mean for your career.
